Sunday Post #75 Luminaries and Snow

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey

It's a crisp, clear Saturday morning and it's hard to believe Christmas is this week. Where has December gone? I actually am looking forward to a white Christmas, although it can make traveling difficult. But it wouldn't be the same for me without snowflakes drifting down and the hush of new fallen snow. When I was growing up we used to have luminaries all through the neighborhood- everyone would get paper bags filled with sand and a candle and line them up along the driveways and along the road. On Christmas Eve they would be lit and it really made the evening special. Do you have a holiday tradition that you especially cherish?

didn't read much last week but I have been planning my reads for January.  I have a few challenges in place so I'll be reading lots of vintage science fiction and mysteries in January.

This past week I had a discussion post on my favorite Game of Thrones characters- stop by and let me know your favorites. I focused more on the secondary characters as I thought it would be fun to explore those a bit. I also had two reviews this week and have a few in the works for between now and New Years.

  1. I love the videos you posted this week. I hadn't see a few and that LOTR one is a big help. The Silmarillion is so boring to me. I just can't make it through that book!! I love watching holiday shows. Right now I am watching Christmas Vacation!

    1. Christmas Vacation, fun! I love holiday movis this time of year. And yes the Silmarillion is a tough slog- I read it once and don't plan on doing that again. I love that world, but it's too much... :)

    1. I think it looks good too, I keep thinking I'll read it next and something else comes up. Soon! :) I've heard it;s good. I agree about Danny Kaye, I like him in that movie and it wouldn't have been the same without him. That movie is like comfort watching for me. Merry Christmas!

  5. Looks like we'll be having a rainy Christmas here. My favorite Christmas weather is when we get a dusting of snow, just enough to put everyone in a holiday mood, but not so much that it interferes with travel.

Have a great week and enjoy the holidays.

    1. Aw, well I hope you get a little snow anyway (if you want it, that is). :)

The movie is White Christmas, and I just discovered it a few years ago. I like old movies, but for some reason had never seen that one. I liked it right away and it's a fave now. :)

      Merry christmas to you too!!

    1. Mine too. All four leads are perfect in this movie, I think. I love when they go to Vermont and when they're on the train, and of course the numbers are great. And I agree about the song at the end...

      Have a merry Christmas!

  8. I just joined Tsu, but haven't done much there...Hope to explore it later, but I'm worried that here is another place where I spend too much time...LOL.

Enjoy the holidays, and I hope you do get your snow; just enough to give you the ambience you seek. Thanks for visiting my blog.

    1. I was a little ambivalent too, and I think the monetary part of it is gimmicky... but it seems nice in the sense that it's like facebook for bloggers. :) So I'm going to play with it bit and see.

      Have a great holiday!

    1. You too, merry Christmas! I'll head over to tsu now, it's kinda fun so far. We're supposed to get snow here for Christmas...

  11. I hope you'll get a white christmas! Here it's very stormy and I don't think we're getting snow anytime soon. Your holiday tradition with the luminaries sounds very magical, it must be amazing to see all those candles lit. When I was little my mom used to take a detour when driving to go throguh streets filled with lights, it was always fun and magical to see.

I really like Tsu so far, especially as most of my friends are fellow book bloggers or authors.

    1. Tsu is kinda neat, not sure if it will last and the monetary part of it is gimmicky to my mind (you're not going to make much LOL) but so far my friends are all bloggers, and that's kinda nice. Like Facebook for the blogging crowd I guess. :)

  14. Danny Kaye is one of my favorite actors. Haven't seen him dancing before a la Astaire.

  15. the luminaries sound beautiful! I've always been home for Christmas and it's usually a sweltering, beach, pool or aircon kind of day, you'd probably hate it lol. Great videos, I liked the Avengers 'singing' more than the Star Trek one I saw somewhere haha. Have a joyous Christmas and a safe, healthy and happy holiday break.

  16. I can do without snow until my company arrives. My guest is a winter-driving wimp. Come see my week here if you get a chance. Happy holidays!

  17. What a wonderful idea that was - the luminaries - would add such a sense of wonder to this time of year. I am holding back on tsu, I see many bloggers (book) signing up for it, but hanging back.

  18. The Avengers is so cute. Haha! I think I need to share that :) Have a great week babe ♥

  19. I love that Silmarillion clip! I may have to reference this every once and a while to refresh myself. I read The Silmarillion once and thought it was good but not like LOTR or The Hobbit, which are amazing! :) I have managed though to forget a lot about The Silmarillion, which in my opinion is unsurprising considering there's so much to remember. ;)
White Christmas is one of my favorite if not my favorite Christmas movies! In my opinion much better than Holiday Inn, which it's based off of I guess. Most people prefer Holiday Inn but I get so frustrated with it because I just feel like all of the characters are basically jerks. It still has great moments though. :)

    1. I agree about the Silmarillion. I read it and while I enjoyed the depth of it (amazing!), it didn't grab me like the Third Age stuff.

I love White Christmas! It's my favorite Christmas movie and I never get tired of it. I much prefer it over Holiday inn, and I think your assessment of the characters in that one is spot on. :)

  20. I always enjoy all the links you add, Greg! So much fun to explore. And I love snow at Christmas, too. I try not to wish too hard since so many people travel...LOL. But on Christmas day it would be wonderful!

We've done luminaries in some of the neighborhoods we've lived in through the years and they're always so lovely. When I was growing up we always had a party on Christmas Eve at our house with Dad's side of the family. We all had presents for each other and it was so much fun...especially as a child.
